Every Saturday morning, Waverly hoisted the burlap sack of pale beans onto the bench, same weight and same scratchy whisper against the iron frame. Today a narrow swell near the seam formed a small hump she had never noticed. She traced it with a thumb, shrugged at the odd shape, and split the drawstring. Raw beans rattled down the scoop, filling the drum that rotated at its familiar, deliberate pace. The click of the gas valve, the whoosh of flame, and the first rising tick on the dial let routine settle around her like well-worn denim. Still, the hump in the emptying sack remained, a muted question resting near her ankle while the drum turned, and she kept half an eye on both.
The room carried two beats now: the slow metallic thud each time the drum’s seam passed beneath the sight glass. Above the window, the wall clock’s precise second-hand tapped on, indifferent to the warm smell building. Each travelled its own tempo; she moved between them, wiping chaff from the edge of the logbook, adjusting the vent, letting her breathing choose neither rhythm. Roasting on Saturdays had settled into a family tradition, yet the pattern unfolding today sat slightly out of alignment, as though an unseen conductor had misplaced a bar. A feather of chaff landed on her sleeve, its pale edge clinging before drifting toward the floor. She brushed, paused, and heard the two beats drift closer, not louder, only nearer, while grassy vapour slipped around her knees.
First Crack arrived early—sharp pops burst before the dial promised them, the result, perhaps, of last night’s lighter-charge experiment with moisture content. Jarvis leaned across the doorway and called, “Temperature reading today, Waverly?”, his voice threading between the early pops. Her fingers already rested on the flame knob, sensing its slight warmth through the thin cloth of her glove. She aimed to maintain harmony between swelling bean heat and retreating gas, yet for a moment she hesitated, sensing the drum and the clock land together. Her shoulders stilled; the knob stayed idle while the cascade of cracks thinned slowly. She released the lever only when the joint rhythm slipped past coincidence, granting the beans a tumbling rush onto the perforated tray below.
Steam curled above the cooling mound, carrying sweetness that tucked itself beside a cherished memory of childhood bread lines drifting from a baker’s alley. Faint ticking within the cooling pile underlined the aroma, each soft click marking the beans’ gradual contraction. The tray’s broad rim received the beans like a family tradition with open arms, metal warm but safe under her palms. Behind her boot, the once-stubborn hump in the burlap slackened—the last hidden beans had rolled free during the dump—so the sack lay flat upon the tiled floor. Chaff settled over it in a thin, rust-coloured veil, and the wall clock resumed its solitary cadence while the drum rolled empty, quiet, and faintly stained.
Translation
