Milo balanced a paper bag against his hip while climbing the narrow stairs toward the building roof. Warm air drifted upward from ubiquitous traffic vents below, stirring the folded recipe between his teeth. The recipe had been copied from his grandmother's notebook, and tiny grease circles marked several lines. He planned to bake one homemade strawberry pie before the evening meteors reached their zenith. A borrowed camping stove waited near the rooftop shed, and a portable tin oven rattled beside it. His fingers tapped the bag in quick bursts, matching the elevator cables clanking somewhere inside the walls.
The first obstacle arrived when he uncovered the stove; a loose valve hissed and refused to stay closed. He tightened it twice, but flames still flickered out, licking sideways across the metal. If he had remembered to buy butter earlier, the preparation would have moved faster, yet now extra minutes vanished while he coaxed steady heat. Batter finally poured over sliced berries, only to reveal a second setback: the tin door jammed halfway, wedged by a bent hinge. He wished he had tested the oven yesterday. Sweat gathered along his eyebrows as he nudged the hinge with a spoon handle until it shifted.
Clouds rolled across the skyline just as the pie began to rise, painting the sky charcoal and hiding every star. Milo kept stirring coals, though his shoulders slumped beneath the sudden gloom. When the timer rang, an exquisite aroma pushed through the grey air. He lifted the lid, and at that moment a narrow gap broke open above the city; a single meteor streaked directly overhead, bright despite the haze. For one breath, the rooftop resembled a pocket utopia floating far above neon billboards. Thin vapor drifted away, and the finished pie cooled beside two empty plates.
Translation
