Alex paused at the entrance of Maple Park, the late-afternoon light already thinning into an ephemeral gold that drifted between the branches. He lifted a weathered camera and tucked the strap under his collar; the delicate machine hung against his chest like a promise. All week he had traced rumors of a glass-wing butterfly, a creature so transparent that the flower behind it stayed visible. Tonight he planned to capture it on film before the park lamps flicked on. The playground on one side rang with fading laughter, yet the inner garden resembled a quiet wonderland, petals carpeting the narrow path in pale pink swirls.
A quick flutter near a lilac bush caught his eye at the edge of the clearing. He crouched, finger sliding to the shutter, but a restless breeze bent the stem and the insect lifted out of frame. His knee scraped soil; the camera bumped against a stone, and a warning icon blinked red. The fragile creature had been recorded by only a few photographers, so the failure tightened his shoulders. If he had packed a spare battery, the flashing symbol would not have mattered. Another glimmer appeared above a fountain; Alex rotated the zoom ring, yet spray from the water speckled the lens, leaving him blinking as a bewildered swirl warped every outline.
He wiped the glass and stepped back, forming the notion of giving up when a silent ripple crossed the pond. Dozens of transparent wings hovered over the surface, their reflections doubling the crowd. Fading light scattered amber across the water, turning the scene into shifting stained glass. Alex shifted settings to manual, reducing flash to avoid glare, and steadied both elbows on a low railing. The first shot misfired; the second froze mid-process as the battery icon vanished. On his third try the shutter snapped, the sound crisp against the growing hush. One butterfly drifted closer, brushed his knuckle, landed on the lens cap, and stayed. Soft wings rested on the lens cap while evening shadows settled over the quiet pond edge.
Translation
