Mara balanced a slim folding stool beside the crosswalk. Noon light spilled across windshields and shopfronts, creating a quicksilver shimmer she wanted to capture before it shifted. She unfolded a broad sketchpad, lifted a stick of charcoal, and began to contemplate the angles of glass and shadow. Around her, engines rumbled, wheels hissed over painted lines, and the pedestrian signal ticked like a metronome. A stray cat wound through ankles near the curb, its tail flicking dust from the pavement, unnoticed by most of the crowd.
A delivery truck rolled past, stirring a sharp gust that snapped the top sheet of Mara’s pad. Papers fluttered like startled birds; the charcoal slipped from her fingers, tumbled once, and settled three steps away. As she reached for it, a cyclist skimmed the spot, forcing her hand back. The interruption enlarged her fascination with small accidents inside a city this large, where the magnitude of motion could be felt in each unpredictable swirl of traffic and wind. A car horn cut through the noise, pulling her consciousness toward the asphalt just in time to spot the cat nudging the charcoal forward with a careful paw.
Mara stooped; the light changed; a tide of soles pressed past. The cat sprang onto the vacant stool and planted both front paws directly onto the fresh sheet. Dark smudges bloomed across the geometry she had sketched, turning windows into spreading blotches. People nearby gasped, then kept moving, their shoes tapping a new rhythm as the next lane opened. For a breath, Mara froze, charcoal between thumb and forefinger, eyeing the impromptu prints now dominating the page.
Instead of tearing the sheet away, she traced around the unexpected marks, letting them morph into clouds drifting above the street scene. The stool wobbled under the shifting weight; she steadied it with one boot and continued, lines flowing faster than the changing signals. When the crosswalk emptied again, the cat hopped down, tail high, and vanished behind a newspaper stand. Buses rumbled off, exhaust thinned, and the tick of the signal slowed to its steady pulse. Paw-shaped smudges rested among the straight graphite lines under waning daylight.
Translation
