Kai balanced his camera bag while following a narrow path through cedar trunks. The trail had been mapped by early hikers, yet fresh footprints were absent tonight. He had promised himself one clear picture of the midnight moth before summer ended. According to an old field guide, the insect hovered near a hidden glade after twilight. Mist curled along the mossy ground, and the air tasted like wet bark. A faded rope ladder leaned against a forgotten treehouse; beneath it, a sagging safety net of coarse fiber still hung between beams, shaking whenever wind brushed the branches. Kai slid under the net and continued deeper, the camera strap tapping against his side.
The cedars soon crowded together, blocking moonlight and turning the undergrowth into an almost abyssal corridor. Kai raised a pocket torch, yet moisture fogged the lens, dulling the beam. When he wiped the glass, the torch slipped, bounced off a root, and blinked out. He knelt, breathed on the contacts, and coaxed the light alive again, only to see that the path had forked. If Kai had chosen the left bend earlier, he would have saved ten minutes. Instead, he tested the right side, but thorny vines snagged his sleeve and camera strap. He stepped back, cut a safer arc around a stump, and finally spotted a faint silver flicker ahead.
The glade opened without warning, edged by ferns that glimmered under scattered moonlight. A hollow log rested near the center; inside, a pale cocoon pulsed as though drawing breath. The place offered silent sanctuary from the tight cedar walls, so Kai settled behind a stone and steadied his lens. The moth he pursued hovered above the cocoon, wings painted with glassy streaks, and the shutter clicked twice. On the third flash, the cocoon’s skin thinned, and an unexpected second moth emerged, its damp wings unfolding like paper fans. Kai’s shoulders lifted, and the camera kept recording until the pair rose over the fern line. Soft light rested on the untouched log.
