The riverfront bazaar hummed beneath late-morning sun. Brass cups clinked, fabrics swung like flags, and the scent of caramelization drifted from a pan where peanuts turned golden; desire traveled with the sugar, stirring feet toward the food and trinket tables. Milo had already crossed three aisles when a translucent glass figure on a corner shelf froze his steps. A tiny walrus reclined upon an ice-blue base, tusks clear as frost crystals. The stall had been arranged in neat rows, yet that single ornament seemed lit from inside. Milo lifted a coin pouch, but a sudden ripple in the crowd pushed him sideways and blocked the shelf behind moving shoulders.

Milo steadied himself and tried to edge back, yet steam from the roasting pan blurred the air and the vendor focused on turning peanuts so the sugar would glaze evenly; caramelization snapped and popped like miniature fireworks. His first reach failed as an elbow brushed him away. A second attempt brought him closer, only for the vendor to slide a wooden lid over the shelf while counting change for another buyer. If Milo had carried taller boots, he might have lifted himself above the arms and coins, yet his shoes slipped on spilled shells, and the lid stayed shut. He wished he had brought a taller friend.

At last the lunchtime rush ebbed, leaving stray paper cups under the tables. The vendor opened the lid again, but the walrus no longer rested on its blue base. Milo’s shoulders sagged, yet before he could turn away, a familiar laugh sounded behind him. His cousin Lina stepped forward, the same translucent figure shining between her palms. She had noticed his halted breaths earlier and had purchased the ornament while the lid closed. The surprise sent his hands upward in disbelief, then down around the cooled glass. The final rays of afternoon light settled on the walnut counter and glimmered through the tiny tusks.

午餐的擁擠終於散去，桌下只剩零星紙杯。老闆再次掀開木蓋，藍底小海象卻已不見。米洛的肩膀垂了下來，還沒轉身就聽到熟悉的笑聲。表姐莉娜走到他面前，雙掌間正托著那隻同樣透亮的雕像。她先前看到他屏住呼吸的模樣，在蓋子闔上時就悄悄買下。驚喜讓米洛的雙手先是不自覺揚起，接著輕輕環住已經降溫的玻璃。午後最後的光線落在胡桃木櫃台上，穿過小小獠牙閃出微光。
