Jordan at Dusk on the Trail-

English Original
Jordan has carried a small sketchbook all afternoon. A narrow hiking trail climbs toward a pond that sits beyond the last bend. He hopes to draw a heron before the crepuscular light sinks behind the ridge. Clouds slide across the sky; colors linger above the pines. Yet distance presses: the pond is still far, and daylight keeps thinning. Jordan's steps quicken. Damp leaves spread over a wooden bridge, and one shoe slides. Arms fly outward while the sketchbook flaps against his chest. Balance returns; mud speckles his jeans. The bridge, which has been patched in places, flexes under his weight, delaying him again.
Beyond the bridge, twilight gathers quietly. Wind rustles through reeds and flips the pages he has prepared. He clamps the book shut and chooses a shortcut across a low stone wall, changing his plan instead of following the longer curve of the path. At the pond edge a tall silhouette stands against the fading orange band. Jordan raises his pencil, thinking the heron has waited. A soft pop breaks the hush; the shape tilts and rises. It is not a bird at all but a silver balloon that has been trapped among the cattails. A grin spreads across Jordan’s face as he sketches the unexpected visitor. The balloon drifts once, then settles beside a branch, and the pond lies still.
Translation
