Lily carried a tiny flower pot toward the playground garden. She planned to place a new seed before morning class. Yesterday, rain softened the soil, so digging looked easy. Soft wind raced across the yard while she opened the packet. Seeds slipped from her palm and rolled beside the narrow pond. One seed bounced farther, stopping at the verge of the water. A green frog jumped forward, splashing cold drops over Lily's shoes. Children laughed nearby, adding more noise.

Lily stepped back and wiped the drops with her sleeve. The wet ground now looked messy, so the pot began to tilt. She caught it, but soil spilled onto the path. Lily searched the grass for the fallen seeds. She found three near a pebble and placed them inside her pocket. A fourth seed rested beside her friend's shoe, almost hidden. Mia picked it up, smiled, and slid it into her jumper pocket. The quiet act raised a question in Lily's mind. A hopeful sparkle shone inside Mia's eyes. Lily planted the rescued seeds, and the bell rang. The two girls walked toward class, dirt trailing behind them.
