Mila arrived at the open-air stadium long before the speeches. She carried a small camera because her brother’s graduation promised a moment worth keeping. Morning light fell in dappled patches across the grey seats, but the path to the front row was already tight. A brass band that has played the school anthem for years took position, and their drums became the dominant sound under the roof. Mila has practiced focusing the lens at home, yet each step forward slowed when families stopped to wave or chat. The ceremony clock kept ticking, and a memory of a nightmare in which she missed the entire event flashed across her mind, quickening her pace.

Near the aisle, a sudden rustle cut through the music. A trained hawk from the nature club glided above the caps, searching for its handler. Heads ducked; elbows shifted; a narrow gap opened exactly where Mila stood. Instead of pushing, she stepped onto an empty bench that had been vacated in surprise, raised the camera, and snapped several clear photos just as her brother received his diploma. When the hawk settled quietly on the rail, the crowd relaxed and closed the space again. Mila slipped the camera into her bag, and the final shutter sound blended with the applause while sunlight rested on the fresh red ribbons.
