English Original
On the outskirt of the riverside quarter, Marcus balanced a slim parcel under one arm and set a brisk pace toward the footbridge. He could have chosen to amble along the garden path, yet a rhythmic clang from distant tram tracks hinted at tightening schedules. Market stalls to his left rattled canvas flaps that brushed his sleeve. A loose stone rolled beneath his shoe, slowed him, and introduced the first hesitation; he shifted weight, recovered balance, and pressed on, aiming to deliver the parcel to the museum before the afternoon bell.
Halfway across the bridge, a cyclist’s front wheel scraped the railing, startling everyone nearby. The sudden jolt tilted Marcus’s parcel, and the brown string slipped. Paper fluttered out, catching a gust that curved above the canal. He lunged, clasped the drifting sheet, but another sheet spiraled over the rail. A valiant terrier—its small frame shivering with energy—bounded after the escaping page, blocked a rolling cart, and scattered a cluster of balloons into the air. Colorful orbs drifted, drawing gasps from shoppers and nudging foot traffic into uneven swirls that clogged the bridge entrance.
Marcus kneeled to gather pages now speckled with canal mist. One page carried a faded sketch of the bridge itself; the penciled arches triggered a sharp recollection of a school assignment he once lost in the same place. He flipped the sheet and recognized his own initials penned years earlier. The parcel, meant for the museum, apparently held work he had created as a child and forgotten entirely. He laughed once, short and surprised, then squared the pages and retied the string, hands moving more slowly than before.
The crowd thinned as the balloons drifted beyond the boulevard, and steady tram bells replaced earlier commotion. Marcus tucked the rescued parcel beneath his coat, stepped from plank to plank without hurry, and paused where sunlight struck the opposite bank. Behind him, the wooden slats of the footbridge rested in even rows, their shadows stretched across calm water.
Translation
