The sun had not yet reached the canyon of buildings when Sam balanced his bicycle at the curb outside Brook Street. A camera hung against his chest, cap removed, lens awake. He wanted a clear shot of the old fox mural before maintenance crews arrived; fresh primer waited in buckets nearby, and the image might vanish by lunchtime. Traffic already murmured along the avenue. Two delivery vans rolled side by side, their windows opaque while onboard computers kept them on autopilot. A road sign behind them warned about an upcoming u-turn zone, but the sudden glitter of brake lights turned the sign itself ambiguous, red and orange bleeding together. Sam rolled his tyres over the white line, steering toward the alley mouth that framed a sliver of russet paint.

An unexpected squeeze of vehicles forced him back to the curb. He lifted the bicycle by its saddle, squeezed past a row of parked scooters, and reached the narrow pedestrian island. Rain from the night before still threatened balance; water pooled around the metal grate and surprised him with a slick skid. One shoe slipped, toes tapping twice before grip returned. The puddle rippled across discarded petals from a florist’s van, pink islands drifting under his spokes. A horn crackled; a taxi halted inches away, its driver’s hands slicing the air emotionally while words tumbled behind the glass. Sam raised a palm in apology, rotated the handlebars, and found space once the light sequence shifted. His shoulders lowered; the alley beyond the crossing stopped hiding, so he pushed forward, wheel brushing a loose sheet of newspaper that fluttered against the brick.

The mural had lived on the right-hand wall, jaws parted in a painted grin. Now a fresh layer of white spread across the surface. Brushes still leaned against a bucket, bristles dripping. Thick primer covered most shapes, yet one diagonal slash of crimson refused to disappear; pigment clung where weather had carved grooves, leaving a lasting impact the new color could not erase. Sam lifted the camera anyway. He focused on the stubborn mark, framed it against the blankness, and pressed the shutter. The click echoed once, then ladders inside the alley vibrated as workers rolled them onto a van. He looked at the small preview: a lone red streak arching across emptiness, almost a scar. The story of the fox would survive only in copies now, but the stubborn line still burned inside the frame. White paint rested over the bricks beneath soft streetlight.

Translation
