Milo stepped off the escalator into the glass-roofed hall of Eastbridge Station, one palm closed around a small cardboard box. The constancy of the overhead clock—its hands moving in calm, even beats—contrasted with the restless flux that ran through the crowd. Luggage wheels rattled, shoes brushed marble, and warm air from a passing train drifted upward. Above the noise, a web of overhead wires sketched the station’s interconnection; every platform, sign, and rail bar seemed linked by that silent lattice. Milo adjusted his grip on the box, aware that a single jolt could shatter the hand-painted cup inside.
A green light winked above the ticket gate, then faded before Milo’s card reached it. The barrier stayed closed, forcing him to step back. His elbow clipped a rolling suitcase; the box tilted, and its lid lifted by a finger’s width. Milo steadied the package and tried again. This time the gate slid aside, and he entered a corridor where queues braided into one another, intertwining like slow, living rope. The bridge beyond vibrated as two trains pulled in at once. A sudden shoulder bump jarred the box from his grasp; it spun, struck the floor, and skidded toward the railing. Fingers scuffed, Milo caught it just short of the edge. Inside, the cup remained unbroken, yet he noticed a folded tram ticket resting against the porcelain—something he had not placed there.
He reached Platform Four and spotted Callum near the far bench, holding an identical box. Without a word, they exchanged packages out of simple curiosity. Callum’s box contained a twin cup—and another old ticket, dated the same summer when both friends first explored the city’s tram lines together. In the quiet aftermath of that discovery, passing passengers flowed around their bench, footsteps weaving fresh patterns across the concrete. A whistle sounded, carriages clinked, and steam from a departing train hovered above the two cups as they rested on the wooden bench.
