Halfway across the market lane, a sudden volley of raindrops pattered on awnings. The shifting canopy broke his line of sight toward the garden gate, and several shoulders nudged his own, sliding him off the paving stones. Behind him, rolling shutters clattered as stall holders protected their goods.

The stone archway of the garden appeared at the corridor’s end. Water trickled along the lintel, landing in intervals on the iron latch. Milo grasped the handle; the wet metal slipped, and the gate held firm. He planted both feet and twisted again. A dull creak answered, yet the bar refused to lift. After a breath, he shifted grip, braced the gate with a shoulder, and the mechanism finally yielded. The effort bent his knees, and fortitude steadied his elbows as he stepped into the enclosure. Inside, hedges framed new winding paths that had not existed during his last visit.

The sundial now stood on a relocated plinth beside a fountain. Milo knelt, ready to set the clay bird in place, yet an empty palm met his sight; the box had vanished during the crowd’s swirl. Footsteps splashed behind him. A woman in a rain-speckled coat approached and raised the missing box without a word. Milo opened the lid, confirmed the unbroken bird, and exchanged a silent nod with her. She continued along the path, umbrella still folded. Milo rested the bird on the sundial’s bronze rim, stepped back, and let the drizzle blur its colors. Above the bench, leaves rested motionless under the silent drizzle.
