Lionel’s aim was simple: ride to the highest point and capture the city skyline backed by the first evening glow.

A self-service kiosk guarded the ride entrance. Its glassy interface refused to cooperate; each tap produced no ticket, only a dull blue glare. The queue pressed forward, shoes scraping, wrappers skittering across the pavement. Lionel wiped the screen with his sleeve, tried again, and the machine spat out half a receipt before choking. An attendant jogged over, lifted the lid, unjammed the roll, and stepped back. The next tap printed a crisp ticket at last, barely sufficient for Lionel to stay in line without losing his spot.

Cabin doors clanged in rhythm as riders boarded. Lionel’s cabin rose, rocking gently while neon reflections crawled across the curved window. Halfway up, a groan rattled through the wheel; everything slowed, then stopped. Far below, music fell quiet and walkway lamps dimmed. Lionel braced one foot against the bench, balanced his camera, and waited. Without warning, a test volley of fireworks burst beyond the rim—an unscheduled rehearsal for tomorrow’s festival. Glittering arcs framed the skyline, and the pause left Lionel hanging exactly at the apex, lens pointed straight into the blooming color. He pressed the shutter again and again, each burst mirrored on the river beyond the park.

Motors hummed back to life; the wheel completed its circle, and Lionel stepped onto the platform with shoulders loose and camera warm. Crowds drifted toward food stalls, chatter returning as lights brightened. He checked the last image only long enough to see streaks of crimson and gold stretching over rooftops, then lowered the device. Colored sparks floated above the quiet water, and his camera bag rested against the railing.
