Late afternoon tinted the city conservatory amber, and Mila raised her camera toward a floating cloud of butterflies. Capturing one sharp image of the rare blue morpho had become her local quest. Above her, triangular panes shifted on hidden rails, inching open to cool the greenhouse. That motion altered the sunbeams, spreading a moving penumbra across fern fronds and stone paths. Each time the morpho settled, shade rolled over it, and the wings vanished into pattern-rich leaves.
Mila stepped onto a narrow footbridge for a better angle. A burst of orchids to her left formed a living cornucopia, petals spilling over a wooden trough in riotous layers. She balanced her elbows on the railing; the leather strap slid from her shoulder, snagged on a metal bolt, and jerked the lens downward. The camera swung, bumped the bridge post, and spun once before she steadied it. That small collision startled the morpho, which spiraled upward toward the central dome where glass met iron foundation beams.
She waited, allowing the insects to settle. A carp surfaced below, scales flashing metallic. Water rings widened until they nudged lotus pads. Mila watched those circles radiate and used the pause to reflect on the rhythm around her—the shutters above, the ripples below, visitors’ footsteps diffusing through palms. A skylight segment clicked again; a brighter shaft dropped beside her boot, warming the maple plank. Light changes drew the morpho lower, wings blinking cobalt. Mila lifted the viewfinder, exhaled, and pressed the shutter just as the butterfly rested on an orchid spur.
Reviewing the shot, she expected perfect symmetry. Instead, the photo revealed a thin silver bracelet wedged among moss stones beneath the bridge, a detail unnoticed by passersby. The ultimate image she had chased all afternoon had quietly offered a different prize: evidence of an object likely treasured by someone who had stood where she now stood. She knelt, reached between rails, and recovered the cool loop. A child nearby gasped at the colored wings overhead; parents drifted closer, heads tilting toward the sudden glimmer in her palm. Mila placed the bracelet on the information desk before leaving, memory card full and shoulders lighter.
Pale light rested on the empty bench.
