Late afternoon light filtered through plane trees, scattering pale circles across the stone square. Marco set his tripod near the old fountain, lines of spray tracing silver arcs above the basin. Children raced between benches, their laughter mixing with the splash, while distant swings creaked inside the adjoining playground. He angled the lens toward the rising water: once every hour the central jet spiraled higher, folding back on itself, a brief spectacle that drew photographers from all over the city. Vendors near the railings tapped wooden spoons on metal pans; fragrant steam lifted from small paper cups. A breeze pressed against his jacket; petals billowed across the surface, drifting between coins at the bottom. The timer on his watch blinked—three minutes until the jet rose.
He crouched to tighten a loose screw, but the zipper on his camera bag caught on a frayed thread. Fingers tugged, the metal teeth resisted, then released with a snap that rocked the tripod. The camera tilted; he steadied it just as a stroller rolled past, vibrating the ground. Spray settled on the lens; he wiped a circle clear. A bubble drifted past his face, burst against his cheek, and left a cool trace of water. A boy chased a paper airplane near the fountain’s edge, slipped, and flung a sheet of droplets toward the sensor. Marco shifted left, climbed onto a low bench for a fresh angle, yet the planks groaned, tilting him sideways until his boot found stable ground.
A hush swept the square as the fountain’s pump began its cycle. Water hissed upward, then twisted into a gleaming column. At its peak, a sudden whirlwind spun through the open space, lifting petals, popcorn kernels, and the boy’s abandoned airplane into a glittering spiral. The spinning air cut across the fountain, shearing the column; half the water arced sideways and splashed over Marco’s shoes. He clicked the shutter on instinct, capturing the collision of wind and water. When the spray cleared, the photograph displayed a hidden bronze plaque on the fountain’s pedestal, a detail usually concealed by the regular spray.
Crowds drifted closer, murmuring at the unexpected image glowing on his screen. The pump lowered its pressure; streams fell back into steady order, and ripples smoothed across the basin. Marco stepped down from the bench, droplets sliding from his cuffs, and folded the tripod. Leaves settled on the paving stones, swings squeaked once, then slowed. Mist hovered above the basin, and the bronze swan rested against the pale sky.
Translation
