Bright late-afternoon light slipped between art-room blinds, striking the half-finished solar mobile on the tall stool. Mira had spent three afternoons cutting foam spheres, brushing silver paint, and tying threads so thin that they nearly vanished against the light. The delicate structure swayed whenever her elbow brushed the table, so she moved with measured breaths. Tomorrow morning a science judge would step into the hall, and she wanted the model to speak for itself. Each thread needed constant attention; one knot too loose and a planet might drift away from its planned orbit before anyone even looked at it.

She lifted the wooden beam that held the sun, only to find the left side drooping again. Several thin wires had been hidden inside the beam to balance weight, yet Saturn still dipped below Mercury. Mira’s shoulders sagged, then she straightened and trimmed an extra piece of fishing line. The adjustment improved nothing. If she had known the glue would shrink overnight, she would have doubled the knots earlier. Staying mindful, she pressed a scrap of balsa under the beam for a slight uplift, but the beam now tilted the opposite way. The room grew quiet except for threads whispering against one another.

A final trial began when a loose feather from the cupboard floated onto Jupiter and remained there, almost invisible. The extra gram settled the balance, yet Mira did not notice at once. Moments later the window latch slipped, and a mild breeze slid through the gap. Air curved around the mobile, turning the planets like dancers; each sphere began to orbit smoothly in perfect spacing. Surprise lifted Mira’s eyebrows as the entire set glided in even circles. The feather stayed firm, acting as the missing counterweight she had chased for hours. The finished mobile hung above the desk and rotated in steady circles.
