Lila hurried through the central station, a small velvet box cupped in both hands. Her brother’s wedding would begin across town in less than an hour, and the ring inside the box still needed to reach him. The hall stretched beneath an expansive glass roof; rain tapped above like scattered beads. A sparrow zig-zagged near the iron rafters, wings flashing against the skylight. Voices blended with rolling suitcases, and electronic boards blinked with shifting departure times.

Near the platform barrier, someone brushed past. The box slipped, snapped open, and the ring skittered across wet stone. It spun once, then vanished through the slotted cover of a floor drain. Lila crouched and spotted a golden glimmer far below. Her fingers met cold metal bars—too narrow for a hand. To the right, a service door stood ajar. She pressed it; the hinge refused. A second, firmer push forced it aside, releasing the smell of dust and oil. Narrow stairs dropped toward an underground chamber humming with hidden machinery.

Thin lights flickered between pipes. Water threaded along a gutter, echoing every step. The ring rested on a grated walkway, exactly where the metal crossed above the shallow channel. Lila slid a notebook through the grid, hoping to nudge the circle toward her palm. Instead, the first touch sent it rolling farther. She shifted her weight; boots squeaked on damp steel. Gradually she edged along the beam, one hand steadying against a warm pipe. A low vibration rumbled as a commuter train halted overhead; the grating shook and the ring rolled back, settling beside her boot. She flipped the box beneath it, and the ring dropped inside with a faint click. A torch beam then sliced the air. A maintenance worker paused at the corridor’s bend, eyeing the scene. After a brief silent exchange of raised brows and a shrug, the beam swung away and his footsteps faded.

Lila retraced the stairs, pushing the door until it latched. The departure board now glowed with her train’s number; brakes hissed as carriages coasted into place. She stepped aboard, cradling the closed box inside her coat. Outside, rain thinned to a mist, and station lights reflected across the polished floor. A lone sparrow rested against the glass roof.
