Darren arrived at the orbital arboretum two minutes before the midday demonstration. The first door slid aside, revealing an air-lock chamber steeped in pale emerald light. A soft hiss followed him inside, and the outer door paused halfway before catching again; he pressed both palms against its edge, metal groaned, and the seal finally released. Behind him, filtered air stirred the cuffs of his jacket while three pollen drones hover in a slow triangle above the grated floor, blinking turquoise. Monitors along the ceiling ticked downward; within the chamber, mist thinned gradually until the inner hatch clicked open.
The central greenhouse rose like a crystal bowl. Visitors drifted between terraces, their footsteps softened by moss carpeting each step. Darren found space beside a low rail just as the dome’s lamps dimmed. Vents sighed; warm vapor curled over the surface of a circular pool, turning its mirrored skin opaque. What he expected to be a simple flower reveal shifted into a stranger spectacle. From beneath the water, bulbous lilies inflated, lifted free, and hovered above the pool on pockets of lighter-than-air gas. Their undersides reflected the dimmed lamps, throwing mottled gold across faces, benches, and hanging vines.
A technician tapped a console; panels in the roof slid apart, and sunlight flooded the dome. Mirrors hidden in the frame rotated, scattering beams that chased one another across the drifting lilies. The plants, coaxed by heat, pivoted slowly, releasing faint citrus fragrance. The crowd leaned inward; one visitor’s sleeve brushed Darren’s camera, sending it spinning on its strap before he steadied it against his chest. Ripples spread where a lily descended too quickly and kissed the water, then rose again, wobbling like a lantern in slow wind.
As the mirrors reset above, cooler air settled and the lilies deflated, sinking back into their quiet basin. Lights brightened to their ordinary glow, conversations returned, and mist retreated from the path. Ripples curled outward while quiet water rested below the unmoving glass roof.
Translation
