Ray Behind the Curtain-

Ray hurried along the narrow balcony above the auditorium, trainers squeaking with zeal against the wooden floorboards. The evening ceremony below already vibrated with polite chatter, yet the projection booth door refused to cooperate. He twisted the handle, and its metal teeth slipped. A dusty glove helped, but the latch still stuck. If he had arrived earlier, the key would have been easy to spot under the yellow lamp. He had rehearsed the sequence of switches for weeks; the reels had been labeled by experienced archivists, and the schedule lay folded in his pocket, crisp as new parchment. Still, the first barrier stood firm, delaying the glow that every guest waited for.
A final shove sent the door inward, and stale air rolled across Ray’s face. Inside, the projector’s cooling fan rattled once and fell silent. Moisture crept over the lens, turning the glass milky. He wiped it, threaded the first reel, and pressed the starter; the film advanced three seconds before the sprocket snagged and slapped loose tape against the casing. A colleague tapped the window from the auditorium side and raised an eyebrow, but offered no solution. Ray unspooled a wider loop, tightened the gate, and tried again. Footsteps under the balcony blended with the hum as the rebuilt machine steadied at last.
Frames leapt onto the screen, yet the expected black-and-white cartoon never appeared. Instead, a homemade montage filled the hall: backstage photographs, hurried sketches, and a wide shot of Ray climbing stairs with an overfull toolbox. Lila, the evening’s cheerful facilitator, now stood in front of the stage, her hand lifted toward him. Her voice drifted up, calling him a kindred spirit who kept forgotten stories alive. Surprise rippled through the audience, then applause fluttered like soft rain along the rows. Soft light from the screen rested on Ray’s sleeves.
Translation
