Milo arrived at the riverside amphitheater while the sky still carried the last fragments of night. A portable projector waited on its tripod, and next to it hung the wide screen curtain meant for the first film of the arts festival. His local art club hoped to surprise early joggers with silent shorts at sunrise, so his immediate goal was simple: pull the curtain smooth and check the focus before daylight drowned the image. Mist drifted low over the grass; in that pale haze, small groups of vendors began to wander between food carts, arranging baskets without hurry.
The first tug lifted half the fabric, yet a sudden cross-breeze twisted the lower edge into a knot around the metal rail. Milo stepped back, arms raised, but the snag refused to loosen. Nearby bushes rustled; a bewildered cluster of quail burst out, skittered across the pebble path, and vanished under benches, scattering leaf litter onto the projector lens. While wiping the glass, Milo noticed something new: behind the tangled fold, faint brushstrokes colored the amphitheater wall. The breeze flipped the cloth again, revealing more pigment—curving lines of violet and ochre hidden for years. Two elderly gardeners approached, their palms dusted with soil. Without a word, they began lifting the hem of the curtain so Milo could unknot the cord. He recognized them from the temple across the river; every spring they venerate a centuries-old bell by polishing its wooden frame. Their practiced movements now treated the fabric with the same quiet respect, smoothing creases as though it were another relic.
Freed at last, the screen curtain slid aside, and full daylight reached the uncovered mural. Figures of dancers arced across the concrete; morning light rippled over painted feet, giving them an illusion of slow motion. Joggers paused, vendors turned, and even the quail re-emerged, bobbing cautiously along the edge of the stage. The projector remained idle on its stand, forgotten for the moment, while cameras clicked and soft conversation drifted through the tiers. Early sunlight rested on the fresh colors.
Translation
