Nora rolled her laptop onto the auditorium stage minutes before the regional debate. She had spent the entire week polishing slides about an early-century treaty, and the slides had been designed with bright maps that made each border clear. A thick lectern offered stability under her palms, yet a cable dangled loosely behind the projector. She pushed it in, heard a spark, and the hall dimmed. The projector blinked twice, then died. Medals waiting on a side table signaled the importance placed on flawless visuals, but the black screen gave none. For a moment her shoulders lifted and dropped in quick rhythm.
A chessboard rested on a nearby display left by the strategy club. She carried it forward; pieces clicked against wood like rain on a roof. Knights and bishops lined up as stand-ins for rival states while the lone pawn waited at the edge. Her argument compared the hegemony of larger powers to queens dominating the center. If the projector had worked, her plan would have looked effortless, yet the new prop forced her voice to paint every border. Halfway through, the queen piece rolled off the board and vanished below the curtain. The loss pressed the talk toward that pawn, once dismissed as insignificant. Nora lifted it, showed how small actors sometimes tip the balance, and the audience leaned closer.
A quiet buzz rose when the projector suddenly revived, but its colors had been scrambled into wild stripes, so she ignored it and finished with the board alone. When the timer chimed, scattered claps swelled into steady applause. Judges scribbled while stagehands searched for the missing queen beneath folding chairs. Nora wished she had thanked the malfunction aloud; even so, the scoreboard later revealed her name in the top slot. The small pawn stood beside the lectern while colored lights rested over the silent board.
Translation
