English Original

Milo stepped through the tall sliding doors of the converted train depot, palms tucked into his jacket pockets. Weekend vendors wove tables between rusted rails, and a bright hum rose as bargain hunters drifted in loose currents. He scanned the mosaic of furniture, coins, and vinyl sleeves, chasing one clear goal: a single tin ceiling tile that matched the others in his living-room mural, a tribute to the postwar years when the building first carried passengers. Overhead windows leaked late-morning sun in angled stripes that crossed the floorboards, giving each stall a restless shimmer as people shifted.

The crowd pinched narrower near a stack of tea chests. A sudden knot of movement pressed Milo sideways, and his boot slid across a loose postcard. He crouched, lifted the card, and noticed a low wooden crate wedged behind the chests. Its lid sat unevenly, as though someone had inspected the contents and given up. Milo eased the lid aside. A metal slide projector, dulled by dust, waited within. The carrying strap cracked when he tried to lift it; the projector thudded onto the plank floor. The impact burst the clasp of a cardboard box inside, scattering glass slides like colorful confetti. Hands from two nearby strangers reached down at once, and the small circle of bending bodies formed instant camaraderie around the spilled images.

An elderly woman in a patchwork coat picked up a slide and held it toward a beam of light. A street scene from 1950 glowed in miniature: bicycles lined against a café, men in coveralls laughing near a newspaper kiosk. Milo’s pulse jumped. Here lay the faces of a postwar generation rarely captured so vividly. A stallholder balanced a desk lamp on a crate, the bulb aligning by chance with a slide still lying on the floor. The ceiling above them bloomed with a cold-blue projection, large enough to stop walkers mid-stride. More people gathered; muffled footsteps slowed; the market’s rhythm altered as the temporary cinema formed. Someone gasped when another slide showed a young engineer standing before unfinished rail tracks, his stance almost visionary against the skeletal steel.

Milo glanced at the projector, then at the empty spot on his wall where the final tin tile belonged. The mural could wait; this unexpected archive carried a stronger spark. He wrapped the projector cord around his arm, nodded thanks to the helpers, and the small crowd gradually untangled, currents of shoppers spilling forward again. The projector rested on the crate, light still flowing across the iron beams.

Translation
