Dawn pressed a pale stripe across the treetops as Mara left the village path and stepped into the glen. A wicker basket swung beside her knee, green shoots rustling inside; the caretaker of the traveling menagerie preferred fresh leaves over sack grain, and the animals could eat before the air grew warm. The glen rarely held more than birds, yet this week painted wagons waited under the branches, their roofs stitched with canvas patches. Metal cages creaked sporadically, as if the creatures inside tested every bar in turn. A low chorus of bleats, chirps, and quiet snorts rolled between mossy trunks, and her boots lifted a little faster.
A tangle of vines sprawled over the track near the final bend. She raised a foot, misjudged the slick stems, and her boot sank between loops of green. The basket tilted, leaves scattering across damp soil. She crouched, gathering each stem while the cages ahead rattled again. A goat’s curved horn flashed behind wooden slats, reminding her to hurry. The second tug freed her boot; mud flicked across her shin. She rounded the bend and faced the wagons. Painted lions on their panels peeled at the edges, yet colors still glimmered where sunlight slanted through the canopy.
The caretaker slept on a camp cot, hat pulled low; one narrow crate had tipped during the night. Its door gaped like an unfinished yawn. From the shadows under it, a small creature padded out—round body, blunt nose, fur the color of riverbank clay. Mara blinked; no poster had mentioned a capybara. The animal nosed the fallen leaves she had dropped earlier, nibbling without hesitation. A hen inside a nearby cage squawked, flapping until feathers drifted through the bars. The motion startled a pair of lemurs, who leapt against wire mesh, setting the whole row of cages clanking in uneven rhythm.
Mara set her basket on the grass and opened the lid wider. The capybara waddled forward, sliding into the basket as though it were a riverine tub. Its weight settled among the shoots, and the distant cages grew still; even the lemurs paused at the unexpected passenger. She gripped both handles and hauled the load toward the cot. The motion rocked the animal, yet it kept chewing the sprigs that bumped its whiskers. A breeze slipped through the trees, moving canvas seams until they lay flat again, and the wagons ceased their clatter. Mist hung above the quiet glen.
Translation
