Niko waited beside the old train depot, camera bag bumping against his hip. A low wind slapped loose grit against the wide iron platform today. A dust storm rolled beneath the roof, clouding each step with brown spirals. He had hoped to capture the hidden mosaic before workers arrived this morning. Grit drifted onto the lens, so he wiped the glass with his scarf. Fine dust already clung to the worn sleeves of his denim jacket. The entrance gate had been chained for years, and its rusty links clung together in decay. He had already shaken the gate once, but only a hollow clang answered. If he had carried bolt cutters, he could have slipped inside at once. Instead, he stepped back, scanned the wall, and saw a window with a loose wooden panel. The panel had been nailed during a renovation, but nails bent outward, scattered like crooked teeth.
He pushed the warped board inward and cautiously squeezed through the opening. He lowered into a hall where maps and clocks lay on the floor. The mosaic spread along the far wall, its tiles bright despite flakes missing from the edges. Blues from seas met reds from markets, each broken line hinting at a clash of cultures. The pattern had been hidden by plywood for decades until this week. Soft evening light now filtered through roof cracks and settled upon the tiles. Dust from the storm drifted inside, coating his shoes, so he sheltered the camera behind his jacket. After two blurred shots he adjusted the focus again. At last the image sharpened; surviving fragments shone while darker remnants faded beyond the frame. Voices outside rose as workers approached, but the shutter clicked one final time. Late sunlight rested across the finished photograph on the small camera screen.
Translation
