Mira climbed the outer stairway of the old post office, aiming for the flat roof where she could sketch the clock tower without elbows pressing from every direction. Below, stalls unfolded like bright cloth squares, and a steady hum of bargaining drifted upward. Awareness of the shifting air arrived when a stray paper cone spiraled past her boots, hinting that the rooftop might offer both breeze and better sightlines. Her former mentor once praised height as a painter’s silent ally; the memory lingered as she pushed the metal hatch. The lid resisted, hinges stiff with rust, and her shoulder met cold iron twice before the gap widened enough for her sketchbook to slip through.
The roof presented a quixotic scene: sunlight cut through gaps in corrugated panels, yet an opaque cloud of dust hovered where pigeons had taken flight moments earlier. Mira stepped around a loose tile that teetered under her weight, steadied herself, and opened the book. A sparrow darted close, wings brushing her ear, startling her hand into a jagged line across the paper. She lifted the charcoal to start again, but a gust flipped the page, tore it along the spine, and sent the loose sheet sailing over the parapet. Heads turned in the market as the white rectangle floated, caught by another eddy, and landed on the hat of a fruit vendor who laughed at his sudden decoration.
Mira leaned forward, following the sheet’s descent, and noticed a patch of faded mural on the tower wall that had escaped her view from street level. The missing page, though lost, had exposed a new subject. She knelt, squared a fresh leaf, and began mapping the newly discovered shapes, allowing the crowd’s motion to set a quiet rhythm for her strokes. Midway through a curve, the sparrow returned, now settling on a bent antenna beside her, feathers ruffling in the breeze yet body staying still, as if the small bird claimed its own perch to watch rooftops shift. The sketchbook rested against her knee, the new page unmarked.
Translation
