Oliver adjusted the strap of his sketch satchel as he entered the city museum’s Hall of Life. He aimed for the mezzanine, where a restored wildebeest skeleton towered above the walkway, yet the floor below moved like a slow river of visitors. Schoolchildren drifted in clusters, index cards fluttering while they compared notes. A rotating globe glittered under the lights, and above it a recorded narration described plankton floating through ancient seas. Oliver, a field-trained naturalist rather than a tourist, stepped sideways between strollers and elbows, lifting his notebook over his head to keep pages from folding. Each pause in the crowd opened a narrow gap; each sudden swirl closed it again. When a stroller wheel clipped his heel, he braced against a glass case containing ammonite fossils, steadying both himself and the display. The traffic pattern finally carried him toward the stairs, only for a tour group to halt in front of a mural illustrating the theory of evolution; cameras rose, shoulders widened, the staircase vanished behind a wall of backpacks.

He edged along the rail until the group shifted. On the mezzanine platform a brass-framed magnifying glass protruded from a pedestal, intended to enlarge tiny tooth marks on a prehistoric leaf. Oliver leaned over to test it, but the cord of his satchel caught the handle. The lens swung, slipped from its groove, and clinked against the floor. He bent for it; the strap snagged again, tipping his pencil tin. Graphite sticks scattered and rolled under the wildebeest display. A charcoal rod tapped a steel bracket that supported the animal’s right foreleg; a faint ping echoed, and the leg wobbled. Heads turned; a hush spread; footsteps retreated, redistributing weight across the platform. A guard strode over, lifted the magnifying glass, and knelt by the bracket. The loose bolt needed only a quarter turn; a maintenance wrench arrived, threads tightened, motion stilled. With the bracket stable, the crowd flowed back, now giving the exhibit a wide margin. Oliver crouched, retrieved his pencils, and sketched the newly stabilized skeleton from a lower angle, the lens safely back in its frame. Sunlight from the mezzanine window rested on the secured bracket and the quiet magnifying glass.

Translation
