A faint sheet of vapor curled above paper cups near the kiosk as the morning crowd streamed across the station platform. Mira eased sideways, balancing a folder stuffed with bright rectangles. She planned to organize every color sample before the next train, yet the current of footsteps tugged her shoulder bag each time she paused. A laminated bench flank glimmered beside the timetable screen, so she settled there, spreading the folder across her knees. One quick glimpse at her watch warned her—three minutes until the whistle.
Metal wheels screeched along the rail; compressed air burst, and a new wave of elbows surged. The folder slid. Pages fanned outward, and one stubborn fragment spun off, skittering beneath an advertising panel bolted to the floor. Mira crouched, fingertips brushing polished tiles. The panel met her knuckles, refusing to lift at first. She shifted her weight, pressed again, and the laminate edging jerked upward with a muted click. A passing suitcase nudged her ankle; she steadied herself, then slipped her hand through the narrow gap.
Cool darkness hid more than her missing sample. Inside, her nails touched a small tin, edges rounded smooth by time. She hooked it out with a ruler from her bag and laid both objects on the platform tiles. The tin creaked open, revealing pressed wildflowers arranged in careful rows, their blues and yellows still vivid despite age. A folded tram ticket rested beneath them, dates nearly erased. While the train doors thudded and travelers switched direction, the discovery lay between Mira’s shoes like an unannounced story.
A guard walked past, humming. Mira slid the tin back together and carried it toward the station’s lost-property window, placing it beside umbrellas and scarves already lined up for collection. On the return walk she gathered every scattered sheet, smoothing edges against the glossy bench. Colors stacked neatly once more, exactly in the order she needed for class. The whistle sounded again, softer now, as the emptied train rolled out. Soft light rested across the reassembled sheets on the bench.
Translation
