Riley set his small telescope in the clearing just after sunset, determined to capture the comet racing across the western sky. He had spent the entire warm afternoon carefully fine-tuning every delicate calibration. The primary mirror had been polished by careful hands until it mirrored the last pink clouds. As a keen observer of night creatures, he also placed a silent camera near the grass, hoping for an extra surprise. The scene looked almost utopian: dew sparkled like tiny lanterns, and distant crickets produced a steady rhythm. If everything went as planned, the first bright tail would pass the treetops within minutes.
Before the light faded fully, a sudden breeze rocked the tripod, smearing the first exposure into a silver blur. Riley tightened the screws, yet a faint tremor remained, so he paused to strategize a steadier solution. He filled a canvas bag with loose earth and hung it from the central brace. The following shot still drifted, as if the stars themselves slid away. While he knelt to check the focus, a stocky wolverine shuffled from the bushes. Its nose twitched at the earthy scent clinging to the canvas bag. Startled, Riley froze; the animal bumped the brace, shifting the lens by a finger’s breadth before ambling off.
A new click echoed, and the screen displayed a sharp white arc carving the darkness. The unintended nudge had corrected the final misalignment that all his calculations had missed. Riley laughed under his breath, wishing he had trusted chance sooner that evening. If the creature had not appeared, he would have chased calibration errors all night. The best frame was already being saved, its data stamped by the automatic software. Crickets slowed, and the comet sank beyond the pines while faint mist curled above the grass. Soft orange light rested along the quiet meadow where the tripod now stood unmoving.
Translation
