Dawn painted the small city farm in orange. Maya balanced her tripod beside the wooden fence, the camera already humming. She had spent a week planning this visit; the photography contest closed tonight. Across the pen, a tall ostrich marched in wide circles, every feather radiant under the low sun. The best angle had been marked by a thin white rope, yet a puddle there splashed when a goat trotted through, forcing her to step back. A violinist hired for the fair began a gentle serenade near the barn, and the soft notes mingled with bird calls, yet the restless giant refused to stand still. Maya adjusted the lens, pressed the shutter, and winced; glare washed the frame in white. She wiped the glass, waited, pressed again—now the ostrich swung its head beyond the post, leaving only a blur. A distant rooster cracked the silence for a moment, yet the memory card remained empty of success.
Vigilance kept her knees half-bent while minutes slid by, but the bird presented only its back. If she had remembered to charge the spare battery, the morning would have felt simpler. Her fingers tapped the body of the camera; no green light appeared. As an afterthought, she lifted her phone, switched to video, and turned off the flash before the screen glared. Just then, the violinist paused, and sudden quiet settled over the yard. The ostrich halted, neck high, as if it overheard the hush. Sunlight bounced from a metal water trough and traced a silver band along its beak. Maya steadied the phone; yet a roaming chicken waddled between them, breaking the line. She stepped sideways, angled lower, and the chicken wandered off. One tap captured a still frame, another locked focus. The ostrich filled the screen, feathers glowing like brushed copper. The finished image rested on the small screen, bright against her palm.
