Milo had spent the warm Saturday morning crouched beside his battered mountain bike, determined to chase the sunrise ride planned for dawn. A solid reputation for punctual arrivals hovered among the group; watches flashed under the noon sun. The frame still shimmered with dust from last year’s trails, and his fingers left clean stripes along the metal. He tightened cables, replaced the chain, and refilled the tyres until rubber pressed firmly against the ground. To illustrate the strange clatter that annoyed him, he bounced the front wheel; a hollow rattle echoed along the fork. Friends gathered nearby exchanged glances because the sound seemed different to each ear; interpretation stayed quite subjective.

The goal sounded simple, yet progress slipped away like air from a slow puncture. Milo loosened the brake pads; no change. He removed the pedals; the rattle grew louder. The front fork had been vigorously tested by the previous owner during downhill races, so Milo suspected the shock absorber hidden inside the tube. However, the cap refused to turn, and a smear of grease spread across his knuckles as he fought the stubborn thread. If he had located the noise sooner, he would have finished before sunset, but now long shadows climbed the garden wall, and impatience twitched in his tapping foot.

A sudden idea arrived when a neighbour rolled a glass marble along the pavement for a toddler. The tiny sphere produced a note identical to the mysterious clatter. Milo’s eyebrows lifted; he flipped the bicycle upside down, struck the frame, and heard the same note answer. He jabbed a narrow twig through a drainage hole near the bottom bracket. Something clicked against wood. After several gentle shakes, a green marble slid out, glinting in the fading light. The rattle vanished, and even the pedals spun in smooth circles as Milo took a victory lap around the yard. The bicycle rested quietly against the porch rail.
