Mila sets a small wooden box on the backyard table. She has prepared thin brushes, bright acrylic paints, and a jug of clean water. The lid has been sanded already, so its surface shines. The brushes lie inside a glass after a quick rinse. A smooth shell, collected from last summer’s beach walk, waits beside the palette because she plans to copy its spiral pattern. A single red tulip opens near the fence, giving her an extra dash of color to observe. Mila hopes to finish before her classmate arrives for the birthday picnic, so she mixes a major portion of coral paint and checks the sky.

A distant rumble interrupts her strokes, and thick drops hit the lid. Rain becomes the first force; wind follows, tipping the jug and sending water across the table. Paint swirls in unexpected rivers. Mila steps back, elbows raised, then shifts. She grabs the box, runs to the bench that stands under the kitchen eave, and places it flat. The surprise appears when the rainwater continues to pour off the roof, washing loose pigment into gentle curves that echo the shell. Instead of fighting the flow, she tilts the surface, guiding the streams. When the shower passes, a fresh pattern covers the wood, looking like tulip petals around a soft spiral. Colors settle as the last drop falls from the gutter.
