Late afternoon light sifted through smashed panes of the old provincial station. Moss framed the doorway as Leon swung his rucksack forward and stepped onto the silent concourse. A once-shiny arrivals board hung crooked; plastic letters stuck on a winter schedule from five years earlier, numbers bleached to a ghostly gray. He aimed to capture the forgotten echoes of the place; a handheld recorder waited in his palm. Flaking posters curled outward, their colors bleached into pale ribbons, yet the overlapping paper created fascination across the walls—layers upon layers forming accidental mosaics. A brittle anxiety hum rose whenever wind slipped through loosened roof sheets, making thin metal quiver against beams. Leon adjusted the recorder, then began to amble toward the rusted clock tower at the far end, boots crunching across gravel scattered where tiles once gleamed.
Loose feathers drifted as a cluster of pigeons burst from the rafters; their sudden scamper of wings startled a small dog-shaped shadow near the luggage scales. Their grit rolled across warped tiles. A tan puppy emerged, paws skidding on dust, sniffing every column before darting in circles around Leon’s ankles. From his pocket he withdrew a half-wrapped ginger biscuit—yesterday’s train-ride treat—and placed it on a broken timetable shelf. The puppy seized it, tail whipping air, then followed him, nails clicking on stone. Reaching the stair that climbed to the clock room, Leon met his first obstacle: the iron door refused to shift. He pressed, shoulder braced. Hinges gritted, but the latch stayed firm. After a deeper breath and a second shove, metal yielded; the door swung inward, scattering flakes of orange rust that drifted onto the steps like coarse snow.
Inside, gears the size of hubcaps rested inside an oak frame, their teeth locked in silent alignment. Leon balanced the recorder on a sill, red light blinking. He touched the main pendulum; the rod twitched, and the entire assembly released a croaking cough followed by a resonant bang. Against expectation, the long-frozen mechanism answered: the great bell above delivered a single bronzed tone that rolled through the station. Dust sheets lifted; pigeons whirled into fresh flight; even the puppy paused mid-scamper, head cocked. Wave after wave of sound ricocheted along tracks outside, then faded. In the renewed hush, the recorder’s tiny lamp still pulsed while motes descended. Dust hung beneath the cracked skylight, drifting in a slow beam of late light.
