Bamboo Wings Before Dawn-

English Original
Callum reached the meadow while night still clung to the grass. A bundle of slim bamboo rods, paper panels, and twine hung from his shoulder, tapping his knees at each step. The pieces had waited in a shed for a fortnight, drying after fresh paint, and now the schedule of planets and his own patience finally matched the sky. A faint ribbon of grey lay above the eastern ridge: dawn crawled nearby, yet the meadow remained tranquil, broken only by the hush of crickets.
He knelt on a flat stone and began to assemble the glider. Joints clicked, hinges swung, but one spar refused to lock; the notch snagged on a rough edge. Callum rotated it, pushed, then frowned and pulled back when the rod slipped. A breath curled in the chilled air; he rubbed the joint with sand from the path, tried again, and the bamboo slid into place with a wooden sigh. While tightening the final string, his coat pocket tipped, spilling a small bronze talisman onto the grass — a coin pierced by a hole, once sewn inside the wing for balance, lost during painting. The coin’s shine caught his eye; he tucked it under the central rib, binding it with a new twist of thread. The accidental weight shifted the wing slightly downward, but the frame answered by leveling itself once both tips lifted against a light breeze.
Callum raised the glider overhead, letting the air test each panel. The first gust rolled unevenly across the meadow, tilting the craft and tugging his arms sideways. He staggered, regained footing, and tilted the nose, allowing the breeze to channel through the hollow spars. A second, steadier current arrived, and the wings lifted true, humming along their seams. He released the frame; it soared a few steps, then banked and circled back in a slow arc, the added coin acting as counterweight. With no line attached, the glider glided, hovered, and at last settled on a patch of clover near his boots, wings stretched like a resting heron. The soft landing surprised him; the meadow’s air held it gently instead of hurling it away. Pale gold light rested across the still wings of the bamboo structure.
Translation
