Nora adjusted a colorful backpack covered in tiny leopard spots. She had promised to carry fresh muffins to her cousin. The cousin waited on the other side of Willow Creek. The quickest path ran across a narrow wooden footbridge. The task had made sense on a calm morning, yet strong wind now roared along the water. Planks that had been replaced last week rattled. She stopped at the entrance to ponder her chances. The creek below swirled, and a stray leaf shot past her shoes. Still, the aroma of warm bread escaping from the pack reminded her of the waiting picnic.

She has crossed this bridge before in light breezes, but today each step skidded. Halfway across, a sudden gust tugged open the top pocket. A small paper kite fluttered out, a forgotten craft project. The unexpected sight froze her for a heartbeat. The string tangled around the railing, anchoring itself like an accidental safety rope. Nora gripped the string and shuffled sideways, using its tension to steady her boots against the dancing planks. When the wind eased, she untied the kite, tucked it deep, and ventured across the last boards. On the far bank, grass bent gently, and the muffins stayed whole inside the silent backpack.
