Late Saturday morning, Milo balanced a cardboard box filled with herb pots. He and Tessa planned to place the seedlings on the community center roof. The only path upward began behind the old gym, where a narrow service ramp curved beside metal pipes. Warm air smelled of cut grass, and distant traffic hummed like a slow drum. Their quiet exploration of the unfamiliar corridor had taken longer than expected, yet Milo still walked ahead. Tessa checked her watch; elevators had been tested that week, yet no button glowed. The wait lasted longer than the queue for ice cream during the summer fair. While they waited, she kicked a loose marble that chose to wander toward the ramp. It tapped the concrete edge, rolled over the lip, and seemed ready to spin forever.

Milo stepped after the marble, but his foot met a slick patch left by recent cleaning. He lost balance, and the box tipped as his shoes began to slide. Tessa lunged, grabbed the nearest handrail, and caught his sleeve. The sudden pull slowed him, though the box now rested upside down. Seedlings lay safe inside their plastic cells, only a little soil scattered across the ramp. They had already waited several minutes, so the silent elevator no longer interested them. Without a word, Tessa pointed toward an external staircase hidden behind stacked chairs. Milo adjusted his grip, and together they lifted the box into the open air. The climb needed care, yet each step brought brighter light and a wider view. At the roof, fresh leaves trembled beside their empty spots on the shelf.
