The afternoon room stayed quiet under wide ceiling beams. Warm air rose from the fireplace and drifted across a thick rug. Dust motes drifted through the light, swirling above the dark floorboards. Logs have burned since midday, and faint ash swirls above the coals. A small cat entered through the open door, nose twitching at new scents. The rug, where she usually slept, already held a sleepy puppy. Between them and the warmth stood a low coffee table. A glass ornament balanced near the edge, catching orange reflections. Behind the table, a wall tapestry showed faded mountains, and part of it brushed the floor. A wooden instrument rested against a chair, its strings still. Earlier, a gathering of people had left the room, so only the animals remained. Outside the window, traffic hummed while a clock ticked.

The cat crouched beside the table, tail swishing across polished boards. One quick sprint carried her onto the table. The smooth surface wobbled suddenly, and the ornament rolled forward. At the same moment, the puppy lifted its head, paws sliding on polished boards. The moving glass reached the edge, slipped, and fell toward the floor. A folded corner of the tapestry rose with the draft. The ornament landed on cloth instead of wood. The impact was muffled; no glass was broken. The puppy barked once at the noise, then stepped back. A small strip of space opened beside the rug near the fire. The cat jumped down to that new gap and settled near the fire. The puppy circled twice and lay beside her. Flames snapped inside the grate, and the two shapes stayed completely still.
