The low sun slipped across damp soil as Riley rolled a narrow wheelbarrow toward the community garden. Warm earth met cool air, carrying the mixed smell of mint and fresh paint. She hoped to plant bright seedlings before the spring festival drums began behind the town hall. A loose gate blocked her path; rust held the lock at an awkward angle. A quick push satisfied the latch, and metal clicked free. A planting row has been marked earlier by thin string, and it waited beside the path. Wind hurried over the plots, tilting the paper map in her pocket and pushing the barrow sideways. The front wheel caught a stone hidden under weeds, and the load of seedlings leaned hard.

Before seedlings tipped, a neighbour appeared, arms full of folded chairs for an afternoon picnic. He stepped left, she stepped the same way, and the narrow path shrank between them. Wind pressed again, rocking the chairs against his chest. Riley shifted strategy; she set the barrow’s legs down, then steadied the trays with both elbows. She reversed two short steps, allowing space. The wheel popped off the stone, and soil stopped sliding. A stray chair leg brushed a tray, sending one small pot flying. Inside the pot waited a curious frog that had hidden among leaves. It landed on moist ground and hopped toward a shady corner. The path cleared, the barrow rolled forward, and seedlings reached their bed in neat rows. Soft drumming rose beyond the fence while sunlight rested on the fresh plants.
