Story Content
English Original
Warm sunlight met the distant hum of buses. A faint smell of roasted nuts drifted over the city square. Marco, a young journalist, hurried onto the wide stone tiles with a thin folder pressed against his chest. A notebook balanced on his arm and kept sliding. One headline was printed in bright red ink across the top page. He has crossed the square many times before. Today the folder carried fresh sketches for an article about the endless weekend market. His goal stood clear near the old fountain. He would photograph the first stall and give the sketches to the designer waiting there.
When he stepped forward, sudden wind funneled between the stalls and tugged at the loose pages. Simultaneously, a gardener who tended the central flower bed turned on low sprinklers. Cool droplets peppered the air and made the tiles slick. A gust lifted two sketches and spun them toward a small sapling. Roots lay half exposed because workers failed to uproot an old bench yesterday. Marco lunged, but his shoes slipped on the wet surface, and he landed on one knee. He changed his plan in the next breath. Instead of chasing the papers across the endless square, he slid the remaining pages inside his jacket. He rolled the damp sketches and pinned them under the sapling’s shallow roots. The wind eased, and the sprinklers clicked off. He rose, wiped his trousers, and reached the fountain as the designer lifted an eyebrow in silent greeting.
Translation
