Lena and her dad reached a quiet campsite before dusk. The place sat inside a shallow valley on a small island. Evening air carried light wood smoke across the tents. They unpacked gear, and Lena planned a simple bread snack. She placed a metal plate near the fire's warm glow. She wanted each slice to toast fast and evenly. Crickets chirped beyond the last tent pole.

A distant ferry whistle echoed over the water behind them. Lena looked up, and a curious gull swooped toward the bread. Its wing brushed the plate; the plate slid down the slope. The hot metal clinked against stones, then lodged under a rock. Lena hurried after it and lifted the rock with care. Under the stone rested a tiny bronze whistle, dusty but bright. Her dad examined it and nodded at the unexpected find. They set the whistle aside and returned to the sliding plate. Lena chose a flatter rock and balanced the bread again. Soon the bread browned, and smoke rose in neat ribbons. She turned each slice, then sat as the fire crackled. The plate stayed steady on the new rock.
