Warm air pressed against the glass roof of the city conservatory. Damp earth carried a peppery scent, and droplets clung to broad leaves; distant fountains added a soft hiss. A single white butterfly zig-zagged above a carpet of rare flora, its wings turning silver whenever sunlight slipped through. Leo stepped carefully; he had charged his camera the night before and aimed to capture the elusive insect for his school project. At every twist and turn between hanging vines, a different pattern of light blocked his view. The central walkway was overwhelmed by roots that had been allowed to creep over the stones, so he crouched, steadying his lens.
The butterfly lifted higher. Leo rose too quickly, and steam fogged the glass of his camera. He wiped it, but the moisture returned. If the lens had stayed foggy, the image would have failed, he thought, lowering his shoulders. A striped cat, kept in the conservatory to chase mice, padded across the path and paused beside him. Its whiskers twitched toward the flutter above. The butterfly drifted again; Leo followed, only to find the next rail had been warped by age, and his footing slipped. The shot still refused to form.
A gradual shift in air occurred when the cat sprang without warning. The leap startled the butterfly, and instead of fleeing, the insect settled on Leo’s sleeve, wings flat as paper. The moment lasted long enough for one clear click; the shutter echoed against glass and ferns. Only after the sound faded did the butterfly push off and vanish among the branches. Leo exhaled, lowering the camera, while the cat landed and stalked away, tail moving like a slow metronome. Light rested on the quiet water.
Translation
