Leo pushed the heavy side door of the town hall and entered the restoration zone. Afternoon light poured through broken panes, striping the dusty floor. A forest of scaffolding filled the nave where painters once stood, their palettes long packed away. Leo unrolled a sketch pad; the curved ceiling carried an intricate pattern of vines and birds that he wanted on paper before new plaster covered everything. Boards creaked overhead, hammers paused somewhere behind the stage, and a faint scent of turpentine lingered—ghost of an earlier oil painting session.
He climbed the nearest frame, palms brushing an iron rail still cool from morning shade. Halfway up, a plank shifted under his boot, sliding an inch before catching on a bolt. His knee bent, shoulders tightened, and the pad almost slipped from his fingers. After a short breath he steadied, then stepped again, higher, until his head rose above the cornice. From this angle the carved swallows around the skylight showed chipped beaks but still swept in perfect flight. He angled the pad, charcoal tapping lightly, recording each curve while dust milled in the beams around him.
Without warning the floor below quivered—a mild tremor, closer to a shiver than a shake, yet strong enough to rattle a row of paint cans. The rail hummed under his grip. A brittle sheet of ancient plaster, loosened by the vibration, slid away from the wall beside the platform. It struck the timber with a dry clap, burst into pale flakes, and revealed a dark rectangle hidden beneath. Leo twisted toward the gap. A forgotten oil painting, taller than he stood, stared back: a night harbor lit by lanterns, water stirred by unseen oars. Colors still glowed where varnish had protected them, and a gold leaf border caught whatever light drifted through the cracked window.
He lowered himself carefully, boots landing amid plaster shards that glittered like crushed shells. On the canvas frame, a tiny brass plate carried the name of an artisan whose work rarely left private homes; the discovery could delay the renovation for months. Outside the hall the hammers resumed, indifferent to the find, and a pigeon crossed the rafters overhead. Dust drifted in a slow column and settled over the newly revealed frame.
Translation
