Metal rasped against the damp wood while distant crows shifted and croaked along telephone wires. Roco tilted his head, ears pricked, but kept still as sawdust drifted onto his back. She had already replaced two slats last spring, yet the structure looked older each season. If she had brought a wider clamp, the fresh plank would have settled faster against the beam. Instead, she brushed glue across the contact points, trusting thick beads to create a bond unseen by casual visitors. While she pressed the wood, her elbow nudged the earth and revealed a rusted tin box. The lid had been dented, yet it lifted after several taps from the flat side of a wrench.

Inside lay a tiny yellow duck, wheels tucked under its body like pieces on an assembly line awaiting paint. A faded crank protruded; she turned it, and the toy rolled forward, clicking rhythmically across the plywood. Roco darted sideways, tail sweeping sand, then followed the duck in a slow looping circle. The plank now rested in place, glue shining along the edge while clamps held both ends harmoniously. She watched the improvised parade—the ancient toy and curious dog—move beneath the leaning slide without anyone guiding them. Light from a gap in the clouds fell over the seesaw, and tools cooled on the bench. The yellow duck rested beside Roco’s paw while glue dried quietly on the renewed seat.
