Grease still marked the oak floorboards even after decades of polishing, and a single row of stamping presses waited like statues beneath the skylights. Elias knelt beside the nearest flywheel, brushing away a film of dust that dulled the brass teeth. Afternoon visitors would soon arrive, and his local goal stayed simple: bring the dormant line of precision machinery back into motion for a short demonstration. He tightened one last bolt, checked the leather belt that laced through every iron pulley, and reached for a handheld device no larger than a pocket mirror. The screen gave silent numbers; eighty-four revolutions per minute would not be enough to synchronize the five presses.
He eased the motor lever. The long shaft spun, belts slapped, and the first press dropped with a dull thud. The second press hesitated, its die hanging open, and the entire operation faltered as belts shivered out of rhythm. Elias frowned, pressed the stop bar, and the machinery coasted into stillness. Oil dripped from a valve somewhere overhead; each drop landed on the floor with a soft tick, marking time he could almost measure.
He slid a spanner under the tension wheel, but the belt refused to move. A harder pull jolted the housing, and an unexpected clatter answered him: a cluster of small glass marbles spilled from a crack near the base and scattered across the floor. Green, cobalt, and amber spheres spun between his boots, tracing bright loops beneath the dim gears. Their dance startled a pigeon roosting on a window ledge; wings beat, dust rose, and sunlight broke into drifting columns. He gathered the marbles, placed them in a tin cup, and turned back to the belt now loose enough to guide. A fresh strip of hide replaced the frayed length, and his handheld device again measured the spin—ninety-five, then one hundred, finally one hundred twenty.
Elias lifted the stop bar. The main shaft hummed, presses struck in rising sequence, and the floor trembled like a slow drumroll. Visitors began to gather behind the rope, watching dies kiss metal sheets with crisp, even blows. Above the rhythmic thunder, the pigeon settled once more on its ledge, feathers fluffed against the mild vibration. Dust settled along the slowly turning shaft.
