Glass corridors threaded through the cliffside enclave like clear roots, carrying hums of distant conversation toward a rooftop terrace. Mira wheeled a tripod and a brass-rimmed periscope along the tiles; the legs rattled whenever the cart rolled over a drain grate. A tall man in an ash coat paused to lift a cable out of her way. The badge on his lapel showed a tiny flag—he traveled here as a diplomat, not a mechanic—yet he examined the device with curious eyes while walking beside her.
On the terrace a mid-morning breeze pressed conference pamphlets against benches. Mira braced the tripod, clicked open its hinges, and tilted the periscope upward for scheduled bird observation across the valley. The diplomat lingered, hands folded behind his back, adopting an analytical stance while tracking each adjustment she made. Mira thumbed the focusing knob; it refused to turn. She tried again, palm slipping on cool metal, and the view tube quivered but stayed locked. Crowds shifted on the wooden deck, creating tiny tremors that rocked the tripod feet out of alignment.
Mira steadied the base with one boot. The diplomat placed two fingers on the opposite leg to balance the weight, saying only, “Here.” The joint squeaked yet remained frozen. Overhead, a skylight panel rested ajar for ventilation. A stronger gust arrived without warning, slammed the panel outward, and a loose acrylic strip tumbled down. The strip clipped a side lever on the periscope, jolting the stuck mechanism free. The entire head spun eastward; Mira and the diplomat caught the handles before the instrument toppled, breaths visible in the sudden swirl of dust.
Through the now-loosened lens, a bright oval drifted against pale sky. Mira blinked, readjusted focus, and the shape resolved into a small striped balloon rising from behind the ridge—no larger than a garden shed, yet painted with vivid chevrons that reflected sunlight in slow flashes. Valley birds scattered below it, wings beating through new pockets of air. Nearby delegates set down coffee cups to watch the silent ascent; smartphones appeared, shutters ticking. Mira logged the unexpected object in her tablet, while the diplomat sketched quick arcs on the back of a programme, shoulder brushing hers whenever the tripod shifted. The striped balloon hovered above the ridge and the periscope lens rested inside its brass cradle.
Translation
