Morning light filled the small attic room. Sam sat on his bed and rubbed his eyes. A soft blue pillow slipped from his hands and rolled away. It bumped a crate and tumbled down the narrow stairs. He hurried after it, but a loose board tilted suddenly. The moving board hit a shelf, and marbles scattered like a cloud. One marble struck the window latch, and cool air rushed inside. The breeze lifted the pillow higher toward the dusty beams. Feathers began to awaken inside the soft torn seam at once. White down floated over the stairs and gently touched Sam's hair. New thoughts sparked when feathers landed on the wooden floor. He grabbed a laundry basket and waited under the drifting pillow. The pillow settled inside the basket, and the chain reaction finally stopped. Sam tied the seam, then swept feathers into small piles.
