Morning light filled the small kitchen.

Mila carried a glass vase with fresh garden flowers. She wanted them to stand on the table for lunch. A large white seashell also rested near the edge. The family found it during a trip last summer. A small wooden stand waited in the middle. Mila wiped dust from it with her sleeve.

Mila reached for a cloth to wipe the table. Her elbow touched the seashell and pushed it sideways. The shell rolled, hit the vase, and tipped the flowers. Water spread across the table and dripped onto the floor. Petals floated down and landed near her shoes. Mila grabbed the seashell and scooped the water inside. The curved shell held the water like a small bowl. She placed the wet shell under each bloom. The vase now stood steady, and the table stayed dry. Mila smiled, then fetched bread for lunch.

밀라는 식탁을 닦으려고 천을 집었다. 그녀의 팔꿈치가 조개껍데기를 살짝 밀었다. 껍데기가 굴러 꽃병을 치더니 꽃을 기울였다. 물이 식탁 위로 퍼지며 바닥으로 떨어졌다. 꽃잎이 흩어져 그녀의 신발 근처에 내려앉았다. 밀라는 조개껍데기를 움켜잡아 그 안에 물을 퍼담았다. 휘어진 껍데기는 작은 그릇처럼 물을 품었다. 그녀는 젖은 껍데기를 꽃 한 송이 한 송이 아래에 놓았다. 꽃병이 이제 단단히 서고 식탁은 다시 말랐다. 밀라는 미소 지으며 점심용 빵을 가져왔다.
