Warm sunlight slid along the park path, and a light breeze carried the smell of fresh popcorn. Short guitar phrases drifted from the bandstand where a lunchtime performance would soon begin. Near the empty diamond, Leo and Mira rolled a metal chalk cart. They had promised to mark the base lines before the afternoon baseball competition. The cart, which had already covered many fields, rattled over loose gravel. Each bump shook the chalk inside, creating small white clouds that the wind scattered across their shoes.

Halfway to first base, the front wheel jammed against a hidden ridge. Mira pressed down on the handle while Leo lifted the nose, but the ridge refused to crumble. A camera enthusiast, kneeling nearby to photograph sparrows, noticed their struggle and offered a flat stone. With the wheel balanced on the stone, the cart moved again, yet the chalk cloud now blew straight toward their faces. Leo has tried a new idea: he dragged his jacket over the open tray, leaving only a narrow gap for the powder. The shield worked; a superior, smooth stripe appeared on the reddish dirt. As the last corner closed, the breeze slowed, the guitar paused, and the white line rested in perfect silence beside the plate.
