Leo reached the town field before breakfast, pulling a cart of scuffed gear. His teammate Mila trailed behind, balancing three bright orange cones on one arm. The chalked lines have been set during the night, and the infield has been raked smooth. A green helmet, which still carried mud from last game, lay on the bench. Warm dust floated above the dry clay. A distant mower droned, mixing with the sharp smell of cut grass. Leo, the usual pitcher for their youth club, carried one simple goal. He hoped to test a new grip before anyone else arrived. He placed a single baseball on the rubber, stretched his fingers, and lifted his leg.

The throw snapped across the plate and bounced off Mila’s glove, then rolled under the bleachers. A metal beam blocked the space, so she could not reach the ball. While they searched for an angle, a raccoon shuffled out from the shadows beneath the seats. Its striped tail brushed the ground, and the lost baseball rested between its paws. The unexpected guard became the second obstacle. Leo pulled a granola bar from his pocket and crumbled half near the fence. The sweet scent caught the raccoon’s attention; it waddled over and explored the crumbs. Mila slid sideways, glove flat on the dirt, and flicked the ball clear of the beam. Their coach stood at the gate, hands in pockets, eyes following the raccoon. The animal finished the snack, climbed a nearby tree, and vanished among the leaves. Leo tossed the recovered ball into his glove, and soft dust rose around his shoes.
