What the Seal Lifted-

Story Content
English Original
The harbor smelled of salt and engine oil; quiet waves tapped the wooden pilings. Mia has practiced alone every afternoon, trying to land one clean throw into a small metal bucket. A baseball rested in her palm, rough threads pressing her fingers. The plank that held the bucket wobbled, and a rusty joint under the railing squeaked. Anticipation drifted above the quiet pier; she rolled the ball once, then lifted her arm. The breeze that crossed the water stole several seconds from her rhythm. She narrowed her eyes and aimed for the target.
The ball flew wide, scraped the railing, and vanished with a substantial splash below. Mia knelt, searching the surface, while gulls circled above. A gray seal popped up instead, water streaming from its whiskers. It balanced the bright ball on its nose, blinking at her. Wind pushed the pier rope away; her first reach missed. She grabbed a longer net, but the handle slipped between damp boards. The seal swam closer, tossed the ball toward the beams, and the tide lifted it within her reach. She caught it, water dripping along her sleeve, and laughed as the animal dived again. The bucket stayed empty, yet the pier stood calm, baseball resting safely beside her shoe.
Translation
